Additive technologies for military application
Event Description:
An expert conference focused on the latest trends in additive manufacturing for military applications was held at the University of Defence in Brno at the beginning of December 2023. The event was organized by non-profit organization DefSec Innovation Hub and its partners. The primary objective was to showcase how 3D printing can significantly accelerate the modernization of military logistics, streamline the deployment of military equipment, and provide innovative solutions in maintenance and repair.
During the conference, experts presented the latest advancements in spare parts production, applications of reverse engineering, and real-time quality control capabilities. The discussions highlighted the transformative potential of additive manufacturing technologies in enhancing operational readiness and sustaining military assets.
Participants:
The event brought together representatives from the Czech Armed Forces, the University of Defence, the Czech Technical University, and the University of West Bohemia, who shared academic and research insights on additive manufacturing. The private sector was represented by leading technology companies, including 3Dwiser, Markforged, Nikon SLM Solutions, and Carl Zeiss AG.
These companies showcased practical applications of 3D printing in defense operations, examples of composite and metal parts, specialized reverse engineering techniques, and technologies enabling real-time quality assessment of printed components.

Event Outcomes:
Conference participants agreed on the urgent need to accelerate the adoption of 3D printing within military units and to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry. This approach aims to ensure that research and development findings are rapidly translated into real-world military applications.Discussions focused on specific methods for the effective deployment of additive technologies in the field, including the use of advanced materials such as metal powders and composites, and the integration of real-time quality monitoring systems.
Company representatives expressed their readiness to support the establishment of specialized facilities for additive manufacturing, provide technological expertise, and jointly create an innovation ecosystem. This collaborative effort would enable the Czech Republic to position itself among the global leaders in 3D printing and defense technologies.
